The Articles of Confederation were the 1st attempt our founders made at a Constitution. They didn't work out too well; the first lecture here explains some problems with the Articles of Confederation by. The second lecture describes Shays' rebellion -- an attempt by citizens of Massachusetts to overthrow the young government and replace it with one they felt would be more responsive to the needs of the people. Ultimately, the weaknesses of the Articles of confederation and fear created by Shay's Rebellion led to a new Constitutional Convention organized by James Madison, where our current constitution was drafted in 1787...but that is a conversation for our next unit -- for now, be sure your study guide is done get ready for your exam!!!! |
