A Federal Judge last Thursday ordered that Central Prison install video cameras throughout the prison and retain recorded images for at least sixty days. This is in response to a lawsuit alleging that prison guards have abused their power in beating and injuring prisoners because they know they can get away with it in areas without video surveillance.

In my view this is a long time coming, and common sense. In a nation that stands for the freedom and dignity of each individual, we must take care to protect the basic rights of even those who have committed crimes. Imprisonment is itself a punishment; inmates should not have to live in constant fear of the guards who are charged with securing the prison and ensuring the safety of all.
